An idea for a strategy game

An idea for a strategy game

I've wanted to build an RTS for a long time but I wanted something a little different and there is this idea I've had
for a LONG time.

It involves building underwater colonies for whatever reason that might be explained in the game but colonies can't just
be built anywhere; they consist of a series of buildings all connected with each other by means of tunnels, which might also
have to be built by players depending on how it affects gameplay.

Resource collection would consist of building outpost colonies on the bottom of the ocean to mine mineral deposits, which
would probably be found near caves or rocky geography, or collect gases from underwater volcanos, which would probably
be found in underwater canyons or steep dropoffs.

Military in the game would consist of building a submarine fleet of varying purposes and sizes such as a standard torpedo
submarine, a depth charge sub or a research sub; which might be used to explore the ocean or somehow discover new technologies or something.

Typical buildings might consist of a sonar tower to detect wildlife or other subs, an infirmary or a sub bay.

To enhance the underwater effect the scenery would be very dark, there would be blinking lights on the buildings and subs and
certain subs themselves would have lights mounted on them.

I'd like the game to be real time but to maybe play more like civilization like maybe having to have the player keep track
of a colonies' conditions such as disease, water contaimination and flood protection.

Just some idea I thought might be worth the post.

IDK if id be too interested in that idea, but maybe you could expand on the military aspect a bit more. I am a bit mediocre on my understanding of why they would need to be underwater. Why not have a full spectrum of units spanning all areas of the world they inhabit, some with certain advantages...

I don't know why they'd be restricted to underwater since that would seem to be more of a
story-line issue.

It's just that the idea of a majority of the game, if not the entire game, taking place underwater seems
rather different and fascinating plus with the game taking place underwater you probably wouldn't have to worry
about the graphical "Wow" factor too much apart from maybe a coral reef or something.

Military might consist of three different classes of subs; light, medium and heavy.
Light subs would be like research or construction subs and fast jet-propelled attack subs and stuff like that
and then you might have medium subs which might consist of your standard combat subs such as ones that carry
a large payload of torpedos or depth charges and then you've got your heavy subs which are of course slow but deadly
that would be useful in assaulting other colonies but what exactly would be in that class I'm not sure.

Then you've got your military buildings such as torpedo or sonar towers where torpedo towers can detect an enemy sub
but can't really shoot beyond what it can see so that's where sonar towers come in, they not only allow torpedo towers to
detect and fire beyond their default range but also notify the player.

Maybe rather then restricting the player's view from an isometric perspective you could allow them to fly (or swim?) through
the ocean from a first person perspective so that they can explore the environment themselves kind of like Battlezone II.

I'm coming up with this off the top of my head but the reason I chose the underwater theme was because it is rather
untouched and different, in fact the last three underwater games I can think of is BioShock, AquaKnox and Critical Depth.

Sounds like a simplified version of supreme commander... or any other RTS that has water units.

i would be more drawn to it if there were more units...maybe add stellar units that can attack the ground...
